The song I actually woke up with this morning was 'Wait and Bleed' by Slipknot, but I'm not ready to espouse the virtues of a song I barely liked to begin with. Luckily, when I got up and made my way downstairs this song appeared out of nowhere, like they tiny miracle it is.

Chan Marshall's You Are Free was a Very Important Record for me, and I'm a bit too close to it to even listen to it now. When The Greatest was released in 2006, I didn't buy it right away because I thought it was a selection of greatest hits. I may have flicked scorn in Cat Power's direction for daring to tear such personal albums into pieces to make quick cash.

However, when she appeared on Jools Holland to promote the record, the title track punched me straight in the stomach for being so ridiculous. It's a wonderful piece of music, so sad and resigned, but with a belief that this life will give something back in the end.
